Over the past 10 years I have moved from Teacher to Coach to Leader of a Technology department. I have lead the technology department in two different districts. I am currently the Director of Technology in a medium sized district in California, a post I have had for the past two years. My passion is the improvement of educational outcomes for all students. I have found my most effective contribution to this is through the development of and the improvement in the effectiveness of a district's technology department.
The technology department in a district has an extraordinary impact on student learning. Whether the development of a sustainable device program, setting policies that support and teach the responsible use of technology, or building a repair program that reduces time away from instructional materials, the technology department allows students to engage with information beyond the walls of a classroom. Further, they support the teachers in using these tools to engage students and draw connections between the outside world and the standards in the curriculum, helping teachers find meaningful ways to answer the question of why we are learning the things that we learn.
I am not the best teacher, I am not the best coach of teachers, and I am not the best leader of a department. What I feel I am the best at is building and supporting teams to maximize their potential. I surround myself with amazing people and work to allow them to achieve beyond what they feel is possible. I listen, communicate, lead up and fight for the department with the goal of supporting all students in the district. I wanted to create a site where I could share, even if for the sole purpose of reflection.
